In the near future, a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called Sword Art Online has been released where players control their avatars with their bodies using a piece of technology called Nerve Gear. One day, players discover they cannot log out, as the game creator is holding them captive unless they reach the 100th floor of the game's tower and defeat the final boss. However, if they die in the game, they die in real life. Their struggle for survival starts now... In the year 2022, thousands of people get trapped in a new virtual MMORPG and the lone wolf player, Kirito, works to escape. The players of a virtual reality MMORPG, Sword Art Online, are trapped and fighting for their very lives. After it is announced that the only way to leave the game is by beating it, Kirito—a very powerful swordsman—and his friends take on a quest to free all the minds trapped in Aincrad.

Series Parental Guide

nudity Season 1 The main antagonist in the second half of the series is portrayed as perverted and sexually aggressive. He often touches a lead female character in fairly suggestive ways, at one point grabbing her breast. This is kept to a fairly mild-moderate degree, but his actions are uncomfortable at best and clearly upset her. In episode 24, the main antagonist tears off a woman's top while she is handcuffed and chained with her arms above her head. he continues to touch her, kiss her forcibly, and lick her face. She tries to put up with it, but she is obviously terrified. It's made worse by the fact that the girl's lover is in the same room, subdued and forced to watch. It is obvious that he plans to rape her, and he continues his harassment while laughing sadistically. She begins to cry when he says that he will rape her again in the real world, as her real body is in a coma. This goes on for quite some time, and he manages to tear off a lower part of her dress as well, but he is eventually stopped and violently killed before he can go further. The purpose of the scene is to convey his sociopathic nature while simultaneously aggravating the audience and the main protagonist, but it is difficult to watch and extremely intense, easily the most intense scene in the series. Season 2 2/10 (First story arch [ep. 1-14.5], will update the second arch soon)
violence 6/10 Sword Art Online takes place in the future within a virtual reality video game. There is no blood shown when people are stabbed or slashed at, the only thing that shows up is some red pixels that represent where a player was cut, or fatally injured. Therefore, one should keep in mind that the violent content here is virtual unless stated otherwise. The storyline for episodes 1-14 goes as follows: 10,000 people are trapped in a virtual reality video game, and the only way they can escape is by completing the game, because if they die in-game, they will die in real life. It's a rather intense premise and it is said that approximately 4000 players die as a result. There are near-constant battle sequences between monsters and players. These scenes can be fairly intense. A few suicides (they jump off a ledge and then burst into pixels as they hit the ground). Episodes 15-25 follow a similar premise as the first 14, but players do not actually die if they do in-game. A boy's hand is chopped off. He then takes his other hand and lunges it through another man. The characters use "Pain Absorbers" in-game so as to mitigate the amount of pain they feel when they are stabbed, cut, etc. so as to prevent any actual harm from coming to their real-life bodies. In episode 24 however, the main antagonist impales Kirito with a large sword and proceeds to slowly turn off the Pain Absorber, causing him more and more pain from the wound. However, Kirito eventually removes the sword from his chest, healing the wound, and then deactivates the Pain Absorber completely. He gets his revenge on the main antagonist by cutting off the latter's forearm, slicing him in half, and impaling his head on the sword, all while the antagonist screams in agony. This is not particularly graphic, but pixelated blood is shown bursting out of the wounds. The brutality is justified by the fact that the antagonist had just tried to sexually assault Asuna, Kirito's lover, and so the over-the-top execution is intended to satisfy the aggravation of both the viewers and Kirito himself. In the real world, a boy is attacked by a sadistic man with a knife, who tries to kill him. His cheek gets cut. The two struggle before the boy ends up on top of the man with the knife to his throat. He is tempted to kill the man, but instead leaves him unconscious. In season 2, multiple fights occur through out this season as the game is a VRMMOFPS (Virtual-Reality Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter) it deals with many gunfights. Then, in the real world, a fight occurs between 2 boys as one becomes pinned and the other punches the pinned boy's face. The pinned boy then gets inject with a medicine (will not tell you for the sake of the story itself) In episode 3, a girl is seen having a history of a brutal shoot out in her past where she killed a robber with a gun he dropped. This is repeatedly shown through out the show and may upset some viewers. This is revisited in episode 14.5 and a part of the shootout could be seen in the intro.
profanity [b2/10 A few uses of "ass", , "bastard", "dick", ,"shit" are used.
alcohol 1/10 A few people drink at a bar. They are all over the legal drinking age. A boy can be seen passing something similar to a cigarette to a girl when she asks what he was doing.
frightening 4/10 Episodes 1-14 is about 10,000 people who are trapped in a video game for two years because if they die in-game or try to escape, they will die in real life. Their only hope is to beat the game and then be allowed to log out. The premise alone is quite intense. In episode 14, it is revealed that nearly 4,000 players died. The action and battle scenes, which are near constant can be fairly intense. There are many situations that seem hopeless and are meant to evoke an emotional response from viewers. In multiple scenes, a boy witnesses a bunch of his friends being killed by monsters. One of those deaths haunts him for a long time. The relationship between Kirito and Asuna is very important to the plot and becomes increasingly emotional towards the end of episode 14. There are many scenes with a potential to make viewers cry, not just due to the tragic chain of events, but because they can be heartwarming as well. In one scene, a girl is killed and a boy cradles her in his arms until she disappears. It is very emotional. In episode 24 the main antagonist chains a teenaged girl up with arms above her head and tears off her top, clearly intent on raping her. She begins to cry and is clearly terrified. He continues to kiss her forcibly and aggressively, which includes licking her face, and eventually tearing off a lower part of her dress, all while laughing sadistically and gloating about his plan to rape her again in real life. He is stopped and violently killed before he can go any further. While nothing explicit is shown, the scene goes on for quite a while and it is extremely creepy, easily the most intense scene in the series. It may be difficult/uncomfortable for many viewers to watch, particularly victims of sexual assault. The scene where a particularly sadistic antagonist tries to kill Kirigaya is quite intense, largely because it is set in the reality, and due to the man's anger, which is emphasized by the blood vessels in his eyes. No one does end up dying however. OVERALL: 21/50 Sword Art Online is not recommended to anyone under 15 due to it's sexual content, violence, and attempted rape scene.
