Series Parental Guide

nudity 3/10 Not much, but there is the odd innuendo every now and then. The odd reference or joke about nudity. Sometimes characters are shown shirtless. There is one episode where Steven is naked, and his butt is briefly seen, but no genitals. In another, Lars is seen naked for a scene, with his butt visible in the mirror for 3 seconds, no genitals. Cleavage is occasionally seen on Rose Quartz. Characters sometimes kiss or act flirty. This show is famous for its featuring of gay characters. Ruby and Sapphire, both who appear female, are seen kissing in some episodes. Sadie and Lars have a big kiss in the episode "Island Adventure". Ronaldo thinks that Steven is pregnant, and this is brought up in a couple of episodes.
violence 5/10 Varies depending on the episode. Lots of episodes don't have much/any action. Lots of episodes do contain fight scenes, sometimes extended fight scenes. These can include punches, kicks, swords, and some sci-fi/magical weapons, sometimes against magical beasts, but main or side characters fight each other sometimes. In season 4 there was very little violence. There is very little blood - only red cuts are shown, and even then only about two times in the whole show - usually we see black scratches when a character gets beat up. Some violence can be surprising. In one episode Pearl is suddenly impaled with a sword (but is fine at the end of the episode). The most extreme example in this category is probably when Bismuth tries to kill Steven with a myriad of weapons, including one that can shatter a gem in an instant. She also turns it on herself and asks Steven to shatter (kill) her, but he refuses. Steven was also chased with a knife summoned by a Ruby in one episode. Most of the fight scenes involve "magical" beasts. Malachite and Alexandrite have a large battle using various weapons and attacks, and some punching. The fight lasts almost four minutes. During this fight, several sentient watermelons are crushed to pieces onscreen. A disturbing concept in this series (first seen in season 2) is the forced fusions - gems that have been shattered and forced together. In the Season 5 episode "Off Colors", a machine explodes and Lars gets thrown against a wall, then falls a great distance, resulting in his death. However, he's revived as a zombie, and there's no blood.
profanity 2/10 Language on this show is very mild generally. Words like "heck", "dang", "what the-" are used frequently. "Sucks" is used a few times throughout the show. "Dink" is used in two episodes. The word "turd" was used in the episode "Gem Harvest". The word "flipping" was used in "The Message".
alcohol 0/10 Nothing really. Greg smokes a bubble pipe in "Alone at Sea".
frightening 0/10 - 6/10 depending on the episode Whilst not usually scary, Steven Universe can become very intense and mature for a kid's show. Darker and deeper themes are explored in this show, including consent, abusive relationships, war, murder, genocide, depression, anxiety, grief, bereavement, and PTSD. We find out very early on (2nd episode) that Steven's mother, Rose Quartz, essentially died to create Steven. This is brought up over and over again throughout the series. The effect this has had on the other gems is shown, especially Pearl who was hopelessly in love with Rose Quartz for millennia. We later learn that Rose Quartz assassinated a gem ruler, Pink Diamond, a revelation that is really upsetting to Steven. The entire climax of Bismuth is very intense. Cat Fingers (6th episode of the show) is infamous for the part where Steven accidentally turns himself into a cat monster - even adults find this scene unsettling. Estelle (Garnet's VA) in an interview dubbed this episode "the least kid-friendly episode of season 1A". Frybo might frighten children. The whole forced fusion concept is quite disturbing. In "Monster Reunion" it is intense when Centipeetle has a PTSD attack and runs through the woods crying and reverting to a monstrous form. "Monster Buddies" has a sad ending when Centipeetle is fatally crushed under a falling stalactite. Any episode involving Jasper can be intense. Especially Earthlings where Jasper ends up getting corrupted. Lars' death scene in "Off Colors" may be upsetting for some, since he has been in the show from the start and was starting to show softer sides. The scene lasts for about a minute, before Steven revives Lars as a zombie. It should be noted that in non-US airings of this show, some of the less child-friendly content in this show (all categories) has been removed. (For example, UK airings have censored many episodes of the show). It should be known that Homeworld is a very totalitarian society that immediately kills any gem that doesn't fit in without batting an eye. This is shown as a stark contrast to Earth, which is open and accepting of defects and differences, and embraces them. 16/50 Official rating for Australia's DVD rating for season 1 release: Mild fantasy themes and animated violence. Suitable for 9+ (PG).
